How can someone become a Christian?

If you’ve ever wondered what it really means to become a Christian, it’s simpler in one sense—and deeper—than most people think. It’s not about joining a church, cleaning up your act, or promising God to do it better this time. It’s about receiving what Jesus Christ has already done for you.

The Bible says, “To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). Becoming a Christian begins when you admit you can’t save yourself and place your trust completely in Christ—His death on the cross and resurrection from the grave—as your only hope for forgiveness and eternal life.

But here’s what took me years to find out: God doesn’t just want 99% of us. He wants the final1% too—the part we want to hold on to and protect. For me, surrendering that last 1% was where true transformation took place.

Paul said it this way: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). The moment you stop trying to manage your own life and relinquish full control to the authority of Christ, that’s when you become a new creation in Him—or as Jesus put it, “born again.”

If you’re ready to take that next step—and I hope you are—you can do it right now, wherever you are. There’s no magic formula, just an honest heart that’s totally sold out to the Lord. It’s simply a prayer that says “no” to your past and “yes” to all the good things Jesus has in store.

“Lord Jesus, I’ve sinned against You and others, and desperately need Your forgiveness. I believe You died on the cross for me and rose again from the grave. You lived the perfect life I could not live and died the brutal death I deserved to die—all because of Your overwhelming and immeasurable love for me. I now surrender 100% of myself to You and receive 100% of Your sacrifice for me. Help me live my life from this point forward, fully dedicated to serving You.”

If you prayed that and meant it, congratulations—you just started a new life in Christ. Welcome to the family! Tell another Christian what just happened, and seek out a Bible-believing church in your area soon.
