Nehemiah had a good job.

Cupbearer to Artaxerxes — close to the king, trusted, comfortable, and about a thousand miles from the rubble he was about to hear about.

Then his brother Hanani came from Judah with news. The wall of Jerusalem was broken down. The gates were burned.

Watch what Nehemiah does with that news. He doesn't call a meeting. He doesn't draw up a plan.

He sits down and weeps. Then he fasts and prays.

The strategy comes later, and it comes in remarkable detail — right down to the timber he'll need. But it comes second.

Most of us reverse that order. We reach for the plan because a plan feels like progress, and grief feels like standing still.

Nehemiah grieved first. Everything he built afterward stood on that.

Jesus said, "For those who have ears to hear, let them hear."
